Adopting and Surrendering

Welcome to our Adoption Centre!

Adopting from the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society (KWHS) is a wonderful way to give an orphaned pet a forever home. At KWHS we have a deep understanding of the temperament and health of the animals in our care.

Our knowledgeable Adoption Counsellors can assist you in making the best choice possible for you and your family.

Please be patient with us during your visit. You may experience a short wait as we pride ourselves in customer service. We ensure that we take the time needed to set each adoption up for a successful future.

Our primary concern is the welfare of the pet, some of which may have experienced emotional or physical trauma so we do reserve the right to select the most appropriate home for each pet.

We are unfortunately unable to hold pets via phone requests or faxed/emailed applications. Pets can only be reserved (to allow adopters to prepare their homes, purchase supplies etc.) once an application has been approved through a one-on-one interview at our centre.

Adoption Fees

The following rates apply to animals adopted from the KWHS although we have numerous promotions throughout the year to assist with special cases or large inventories:

Let’s go home, buddy!

Start off on the right foot, We’ll review all the health and behavior info, like vaccines and training with you. Most of our animals can be taken home on the same day of adoption, but we’ll make sure those who need additional procedures, like spay/neuter surgery, get taken care of based on our evaluations.

Surrendering a pet

It is always difficult to surrender a pet. Our staff will work with you to see if there are any alternatives so you and your pet may remain as a family. When circumstances are such that staying together is impossible our staff will arrange the appropriate time to surrender your pet. We are only able to receive surrender pets by appointment only, as we have limited space and resources. Please call the Centre at 519-745-5615 to see if there are alternatives to surrendering and to ensure space is available. When the shelter is at capacity, in the best interest of the pet, owners will be encouraged to wait until the Centre has space available before surrendering their pet.
